  • Called the "greatest battle implement ever devised" by General George S. Patton.  The weapon was known for being immensely strong, simple, reliable, and accurate.
  • Served as the replacement for the lower quality Springfield rifle that can also be seen in this case.
  • The M1 became the first self-loading rifle to be adopted as a standard weapon in 1936 and would serve as the standard rifle of the U.S. throughout WWII.
  • Because it was the only self-loader in general use during the conflict, U.S. forces possessed a distinct advantage over the enemy, who used bolt-action weaponry, meaning their firing speed not as high.
  • The M1 Garand was produced through the 1950s, with more than 6 million produced in total.  It saw use in Korea and was eventually replaced by the M14.
