- Depth charge launchers were mounted on the rear of Navy ships, usually those specifically designated at "sub-chasers".
- Double barrels allowed the Y-Gun to fire two charges at once, increasing the probability that a sub would be hit.
- Both charges could be launched to a minimum of 50 yards away from the ship and could be shot even further depending on the weight of the charge.
- Both barrels were fitted with arbors, a type of ammunition holder made up of a half-cylindrical latch fitted into a circular bar. These arbors were then inserted into both barrels and charges were attached. Both the arbors and the depth charges were then fired out of the double barrels.
- Operated similarly to a cannon-- a powder charge was inserted, primed, and a firing pin was pulled. Both barrels then discharged.
